\"20160925_130535\"<\/a>It’s InkTober time again, and this year I’m finally doing it. 31 drawings in 31 days. In case you don’t know, InkTober is a drawing challenge that was invented in 2009 by Jake Parker. The official rules and history are posted here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Yesterday I was invited by some fellow artists at DeviantArt to join them in their first attempt at InkTober, and I thought that it would really help me to improve. I’m not that concerned about my inking (although it can certainly use improvement), I just think that the rate of one finished drawing a day for a whole month will help me iron out a methodology for finishing more pieces.<\/p>\n

I recently read this awesome article<\/a> by Chris Sanders (of Lilo & Stitch fame) explaining his process of completing an illustration and it really inspired me. I love the fact that he uses nearly all traditional tools when hashing out the sketches. His process resembles mine, but his is far more developed. I want to do more iterations before I start inking. I also was really impressed by how he just cut the witch’s leg out and re-positioned it with glue. Brilliant!<\/p>\n

So, I decided to do a little prep work to motivate myself and combine the two ideas. I went through a pile of old sketches and sifted out the ones that I thought could be turned into something. I focused mostly on the gesture of each, thinking about the story behind what the character was doing or thinking. Here are some of the sketches:<\/p>\n

Then I dragged my ghetto ass DIY lightbox out of my closet and started to work with the tracing paper, making a valiant attempt to form them into some sort of composition. Here’s my lightbox:<\/p>\n

I’m not entirely sure if you’re supposed to totally create a drawing each day from scratch, or if it’s ok to work with some already sketched out ideas, but I’m not that strict about it. As I said, I’m also trying to develop a many version method of finishing so I’m fine if I bend the rules a little. I’ll be starting from the sketch each day and working through to the finished inks. So,\u00a0 I think I’m ready, albeit a little intimidated by the schedule. I’ve opted for the full 31 drawings, not taking the easy way out!
