Dipping into Freelancing

The last couple of months have really torn me away from any sort of regular schedule. My main computer died, I had an important public speaking event, there was a structural near-disaster at my house (prompting me to move all of my books). It was pretty hectic.

But, I continued to work – to write, play music, and to draw. So now, I’m just trying to get back into the groove of things and to continue on with this blog and to post art on Twitter and DeviantArt. In addition to all of that, I’m also trying to get started with some freelance work.

I know that most successful freelance artists spent many years building up their clientele and reputation; they probably would scoff at my attempt to enter the market. But, I feel I have no choice. I have to start billing for some of the work that I do for other people. I’m really trying to envision how it will all work out because I don’t really feel that I fit into any particular niche, and I also don’t have a huge amount of work that’s out there for clients to see. I’ll be doing my best over the coming months to build up my online portfolio and to be more prolific in finishing pieces.

I’m also trying to focus a little more on other artists properties, so to speak. By that, I mean fan art and portraits in the illustration field and covers and classics in the music field. Most of my practice has not been focused on other artist’s characters or songs. With the exception of classical pieces, I hardly ever play other people’s music and I really have to start adding favorites to my repertoire. I certainly draw things that originate from other artists; I used to actually copy full panels, line by line, from Gunnm. But, I never really made any effort to upload finished fan art online. I feel that, for illustrators, fan art is pretty much the same thing as cover songs are to musicians. Sometimes fun, sometimes lame, but it’s always a good idea to give the people what they want, right?

So, hopefully I’ll figure out how to go about pricing my work and arranging bookings for performance or recordings. I’m sure things will be slow getting started, but I’m really beginning to look forward to doing work other than my own projects. I’ll keep posting here with updates about how it’s going, so you can all laugh at my mistakes.  🙂
